Objectives of KVK


To provide training & communication support to the district level development agencies like agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries and NGOs in their extension programmes.


DHARWAD DISTRICT AT A GLANCE


Dharwad district has total geographical area of 4.27 lakh ha with cultivated area 3.60 lakh ha and it comprises of three Agro-climatic zones, i.e. dry zone (zone - 3), northern transitional zone (zone - 8) and part of hilly zone (zone - 9). The Navalagund taluk comes under dry zone with typical rabi based cropping system and mostly medium to deep black soils. The average annual rainfall ranges from 500-600m.m. With September & October are the peak rainfall months. Therefore rabi crops like Sorghum, Wheat, Bengalgram are the major crops.


Transitional zone (zone - 8) comprises three taluks – Dharwad, Hubli & Kundagol. In this tract the rainfall is fairly assured with July – October are the peak rainfall months with average annual rainfall of 700 – 750m.m. Red and black soils are predominant in this areas. Groundnut, Soybean, Hybrid Jowar, Green gram and Maize are important crops in kharif. The hybrid cotton is grown as commercial crop. Bengal gram and Jowar during the rabi grown on residual soil moisture. In black soil double cropping is common in this area. In horticulture crops – Mango, Sapota, Guava and Banana are main fruit crops and vegetables like Peas, Brinjal, Tomato, Green chilli etc. are grown. Farm Forestry is an upcoming field. Buffaloes form a major chunk as compared to crossbred cows.


The entire taluka of Kalaghatagi comes under hilly tract (zone - 9). It is characterized by high rainfall areas with average up to 900m.m. Majority soils are red mixed black with low fertility. Drill sown paddy occupies major area under rainfed situations. Off late the area Soybean & Cotton and Maize is increasing due to changing rainfall pattern.
