Activities of KVK

The programme Co-ordinator is the head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra specialized in the field of seed science & Technology. KVK has six Subject Matter Specialists and three Programme Assistants specialized in different fields of Agriculture & software. The total team of scientists is involved in dissemination of technical information through on & off campus training programmes, Front Line Demonstration, On Farm Testing, Exhibition, Field days, Field visits, Method demonstrations, Formation of Commodity groups, SHGs, TTC, IGA and consultancy services to the farming community with more emphasis on implementation of the integrated farming system modules (IFS) for sustainable agriculture & to uplift the socio economical position of the farmer. In addition the Programme Co-ordinator is working as Site officer, Organic village programme (Govt. of Karnataka) at Kamadhenu & Harogeri village of Kalaghatagi taluk and actively involved in converting 100 ha of land into organic cultivation, since 2005-06


Transfer of technology is also effectively carried out by diffusion of information through group meetings, farm visits, personal contacts, through telephone, through newspapers, leaflets, FM Radio and television programmes.


Scientific Advisory Committee meeting will be conducted twice in a year under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor, UAS, Dharwad. The Director of Extension, Extension Co-ordinator, Representatives of Non Govt. Organization (NGO), Heads of all the Developmental departments, progressive farmers and farmwomen are the members of SAC and they review the progress made in the previous year and suggest future plan of work.



Collaborative activities :


A group of 30 rural girls has been formed in collaboration with Sadhana NGO for conducting tailoring, Kasuti & Embroidery training programme each for a period of 3 months.

ICRISAT, Hyderabad :


Project on “Enhanced utilization of sorghum & pearl millet grains in poultry feed industry to improve the livelihoods of small scale farmers” funded by ICRISAT, Hyderabad was initiated during 2007-08. The project was implemented in cluster villages of Dharwad taluk viz., Madanabhavi, Mangalagatti, Mulamuttala, Lokur, Pudakalakatti and Marewada and sorghum growers association was established in Madanabhavi. Farmers were educated about market & provided market linkage with poultry feed manufacturers around Dharwad and Hubli.

Beejagrama Yojane :

Beejagrama Yojane under organic village programme at Kamadhenu village of Kalaghatagi taluk has been established in order to preserve the local genotypes of different crops at village level.

Popularization of composting cultures :


Composting culture is popularized through demonstration on farmers field at Marewad village of Dharwad taluk. During kharif season the farmer by name Sri. Basavaraj Kundagol approached the KVK with a problem of non decomposing of weed (Igali). The farmer was suggested to make use of decomposing cultures and the demonstration was also conducted and it was successful in complete decomposition of weed heap within 3 months. The some technology has been adopted by 10 farmers of Marewada village. Intervention is as follows

Decomposing cultures :


  1. Phanaerochaete chrysosporium

  2. Aspergillus awamori

  3. Trichoderma viride

  4. Pleurotus sp.

Procedure : Chaff the biomass in to small pieces with a size of 1 – 2 inches & stock

layer wise.


Mix the culture with biogas or cattle dung slurry and spray in

between layers of biomass and stock the biomass compactly.


Mix the biomass after a period of 3 weeks and maintain the moisture at

60%
