Seed Production Activities
Seed is the basic input in agriculture that carries and act as catalyst for all other improved technologies to increase agricultural production. Therefore, the university has given top priority for seed production and technology transfer through supply of quality seeds to the farming community. There has been substantial increase in the mandatory breeder seed production, which was 13,615 qtls during 2007-08. With this achievement, UAS, Dharwad could rise to second position in total breeder seed production on all India basis. There is also a quantum jump in production and supply of foundation seeds of parental lines of new hybrids and varieties, which stood at 2,189 quintals in 2007-08 and that of Certified / TL seeds was 13,930 quintals during 2007-09. During 2008-09 it is targeted to produce 11,098 qtls breeder seed, 6,189 qtls of foundation seed and 48,278 qtls of certified/TL seed. Expansion of seed production activities has been possible through public-private-university-farmer linkage and the university has played a vital role in this linkage. The performance of seed production activities of the university has been recognized by ICAR and therefore, UAS Dharwad has been identified as one of the model BSP units in the country. The university has developed ultramodern seed processing plant, mega seed storage godown and seed testing/research, molecular laboratory, GMO crops quality testing laboratories.
